The Archived Record: Language Tools and Communication Tools
This is no longer only a recollection of what I said years ago. A public archive survives. My original Revelation in Stone site carries a Copyright 2012 notice; the earliest Wayback capture I can independently verify is from 2013.
On that archived homepage I explicitly used the phrases “visual language devices”, “prehistoric language tools” and “communication tools”. I described recurring animal motifs as basic “words” within the stones and proposed that the objects could silently convey information about nearby animals and hunting.

How the Proposed Communication Devices Could Work
The central claim needs to be demonstrated physically, not left as an abstract theory. These objects are small enough to be held, turned and pointed to. In my interpretation, different classes of artefact provide different kinds of selectable information. The examples below are working reconstructions of how some of the devices could have operated.
The exact prehistoric meanings cannot simply be asserted from modern intuition. The test is whether the same feature, position and manipulation recur across independent objects strongly enough to reveal a convention.
Device 1 — Ape Face: Gaze, Direction and Behaviour
The grey ape-face object provides the clearest practical demonstration. I interpret several selectable eye or pupil forms within the socket region, together with mouth, tongue, ear and alternative facial details.
- Hold the recognised ape face upright to establish the subject.
- Point to a pupil or eye form to indicate where the animal is looking.
- Rotate the object to indicate the direction of the head or body.
- Point to the mouth or protruding tongue to indicate feeding.
- Select a closed eye for sleep/rest, or the ear for hearing/alertness.
Device 2 — Rotating Polyglyph: Select the Subject by Turning the Stone
Many of my finds contain several coherent animal readings sharing the same worked edges and internal features. Rotation changes which subject becomes dominant. In a communication system, this gives a compact object a simple selection mechanism.
- Present the stone in one orientation to select animal A.
- Rotate it to a second stable orientation to select animal B.
- Point to a shared eye, mouth, limb or geometric mark to refine the reading.
- Combine rotation with gesture toward the landscape to add direction or location.
Device 3 — Ovate / Egg: The Whole Tool Form as a Lexeme
Some communication may be carried not by a small engraved sign but by the overall form of the tool. I argue that the recurring ovate handaxe is one such case: the egg is not merely drawn on the object; the entire object can embody the egg form.
- The whole outline supplies a recognised concept before any internal detail is selected.
- Species-specific geometry, associated motifs or orientation could narrow the intended reference.
- The tool remains functional while simultaneously carrying the visual concept.
Device 4 — Recurring Motifs: A Lexicon Across Tools
Not every element needs an immediately reconstructed sentence-level meaning. Repeated elephants, apes, hands, thumbs, eyes, diamonds and other motifs can first be treated as candidate lexical units: stable visual forms recurring across different tools.
- Identify the recurring form on independent artefacts.
- Map where it appears relative to the tool's working edges and other imagery.
- Compare whether the same motif combines with the same neighbouring motifs.
- Only then test what communicative function the recurring unit may have served.
The Visual Device Does Not Replace Language — It May Depend on It
A communication object does not have to replace speech. In fact, a visual code may first have to be taught by speech, gesture and demonstration before it can be used silently. That distinction fits experimental stone-knapping research extremely well.
Morgan and colleagues tested Oldowan skill transmission across five learning conditions and found that performance improved with teaching and particularly with language. Lombao and colleagues likewise found that apprentices taught through gestural or verbal communication learned a systematic knapping method more effectively than apprentices restricted to visual observation; verbal learners were especially successful at retaining the method when the teacher was removed.
The Boxgrove paper makes the same problem concrete in the Lower Palaeolithic. Turning-the-edge is described as visually and causally opaque, and the authors argue that it may not have been learnable through observation or even pointing alone. They therefore infer conventional referents for subtle technological concepts.
THE STONE CARRIES THE CODE.

THE MESSAGE CAN THEN BE TRANSMITTED SILENTLY.
That gives my hunting hypothesis a coherent learning model. Around a camp, a child or apprentice could be taught what the visual conventions meant: this eye, this animal, this orientation, this mouth, this ear. Once the convention was shared, the same device could be used in a situation where vocalising was undesirable.

Boxgrove: Symbolic Communication and a Lexicon 480,000 Years Ago
In September 2025, Ceri Shipton, Frederick Foulds, Aaron Rawlinson, Mathieu Leroyer, Nick Ashton and Mark White published a major Boxgrove study in the Cambridge Archaeological Journal. The paper appears in Volume 36 (2026) and examines communication through the technology of the approximately 480,000-year-old Boxgrove handaxes.
Their argument comes from two technological observations. Boxgrove knappers repeatedly produced difficult tranchet-tipped handaxes to unusually consistent standards, indicating socially shared norms. They also used the technically subtle process known as turning-the-edge, which the authors argue may be too causally opaque to transmit reliably by imitation or pointing alone.
The consequence is remarkable. They argue that teaching this technology may have required arbitrary referents, socially understood concepts and specific signals. Their conclusion describes the possibility of “symbolic precision in communication, i.e. lexicon” by around half a million years ago.

Brett Was Right About the Core Direction
The Boxgrove paper does not validate every image I identify, and it does not claim that Boxgrove handaxes were pictorial hunting message boards. That distinction matters.
But on the central issue the direction is unmistakable. I argued publicly that prehistoric stone artefacts carried recurring communicative conventions and iconographic “words”. More than a decade later, mainstream research at Boxgrove is explicitly discussing collectively understood rules, arbitrary signals, named concepts, symbolic communication and a lexicon within Lower Palaeolithic stone technology.
That is genuine convergence.
What was easy to dismiss as impossible because of its age is now an active problem in professional archaeology: how much communicative information can be recovered from the structure of ancient stone technology?

Boxgrove infers a lost lexicon from recurring technological structure. My stronger claim is that parts of the lexicon remain materially visible in recurring forms within the tools themselves.
Where is the Boxgrove lexicon? No speech or teaching gesture survives. The stone artefacts are the archaeological evidence. Boxgrove uses their repeated technological structure to infer the missing symbolic system. I argue that the same principle should be carried further: recurring egg/ovate forms, elephants, apes, hands, thumbs and other conventions are not merely evidence that a lexicon once existed; in my interpretation they are surviving units of that lexicon.
My Model: The Stone Itself as a Communication Interface
My hypothesis is operational: the stone itself is the interface. A recognised subject establishes the referent; a selected detail changes the state; orientation adds direction; and gesture tells the receiver which feature is active.
In the grey ape-face find, for example, I interpret multiple selectable eye or pupil forms. One could indicate direction of gaze. Rotating the stone could indicate which way the animal's head was facing. A tongue or mouth could indicate feeding; a closed eye could indicate sleep or reduced awareness; an emphasised ear could indicate listening or alertness.
These meanings remain hypotheses. What matters scientifically is whether the same visual conventions recur across independent artefacts with enough regularity to support a shared system.
Why Hunting Is a Logical Use Case
Hunting creates an obvious need for silent, specific communication. Speech can alert prey. Gesture is useful, but a portable object can retain the identity of an animal while additional pointing and orientation modify the information being conveyed.
My 2012-era site was already proposing precisely this practical possibility: objects conveying what animals were nearby, what might be hunted and other information without vocalising.
This use of orientation and selected signs is not inherently implausible. Ethnographic message-stick systems show that mobile hunter-gatherers can use an object's direction and conventional features to transmit practical information about movement, food and danger. The archaeological question is whether the same communication logic can be demonstrated in the prehistoric stone record.
Tool Form, Working Logic and Communication
The communication question cannot be separated from lithic technology. Many of the pieces I study are not merely shaped images: the same objects preserve working edges, reduction logic, targeted sharpening, organised flake removals and functional design.
This is where the Boxgrove research becomes especially relevant. Their lexicon argument emerges not from cave painting or engraved notation, but from the technological organisation of stone tools themselves. The stone records rules, decisions and socially transmitted concepts.
My claim adds another possible information layer: some tools also carry recurring figurative and geometric conventions. If both technological and iconographic organisation are present in the same object, the distinction between “tool” and “communication device” may be much less absolute than modern categories suggest.
Boxgrove Ovates, Shared Form and the Egg Hypothesis
Boxgrove is famous for highly refined and strongly standardised handaxes, with ovate forms especially prominent. Recent research continues to emphasise their unusual standardisation, sophisticated thinning and highly controlled finishing.
I have separately argued that the ovate itself deserves to be read as information: the repeated egg-like geometry may not simply be a convenient cutting-tool outline. My goose-egg comparison asks whether an immediately recognised natural form could have been deliberately embedded in the tool's geometry.
That egg interpretation is my hypothesis, not a conclusion of the Boxgrove researchers. But it is directly relevant to the larger question raised here: if Boxgrove handaxe form was governed by socially understood rules, what else might those repeated forms have communicated to the people who made and used them?

A Necessary Historical Distinction
I was not the first person to connect stone-tool production with language in the broadest sense. Archaeologists had previously discussed speech, teaching, cognition and the relationship between Acheulean technology and language. Boxgrove itself had been used in earlier arguments about the possibility of speech.
My documented claim was narrower and different: that recurring visual forms within stone artefacts constituted a readable vocabulary and that the stones themselves could function as communication devices. That is the claim for which the surviving 2013 archive provides a clear public timestamp.
This distinction makes the comparison stronger, not weaker. The new Boxgrove paper independently arrives at the need for socially shared signals, concepts and lexicon from another line of lithic evidence.
If the Same Code Is Global, the Implications Are Enormous
My wider claim has never been limited to one Southdowns site. I recognise the same broad families of visual convention — recurring animal heads, apes, elephants, hands and thumbs, shared eyes, geometric eye forms, rotational images and imagery integrated into tool form — in material from widely separated regions and collections.
If systematic comparison demonstrates that genuinely independent assemblages across continents use the same visual units in the same structural ways, then the problem becomes much larger than local art. It would raise questions about the depth, transmission and stability of a prehistoric communication tradition, and about how far back a shared visual vocabulary may extend.
That global claim must be demonstrated object by object and convention by convention. But the correct response to recurrence is comparison, not dismissal. A code becomes more compelling when the same rule works beyond the collection in which it was first recognised.
A Functional Analogue from Hunter-Gatherer Communication
There is also a useful modern analogue for the architecture of such a system. Punan Batu hunter-gatherers in Borneo use message sticks whose direction, length and conventional signs communicate destination, distance, identity, requests for food, resources and warnings. The Punan system does not prove the prehistoric stone hypothesis; it demonstrates that a portable object can combine orientation + learned sign + practical foraging information in a functioning hunter-gatherer communication system.

What Would Demonstrate a Genuine Prehistoric Communication System?
- Recurrence: the same proposed sign or motif must occur on independent objects.
- Stable placement: the feature should occupy comparable meaningful positions.
- Selectable alternatives: one object may provide more than one eye, direction, posture or reading.
- Manipulation: rotation or pointing should alter the message coherently.
- Technological integration: signs should relate to deliberate flaking, shaping, engraving, pigment or tool design.
- Cross-assemblage structure: the same conventions should appear beyond a single favourite specimen.
- Independent readability: blind comparison should test whether observers identify recurring structures without extensive prompting.
The Boxgrove Challenge
The modern archaeological question has moved. It is no longer credible to assume that a half-million-year-old stone-tool culture was necessarily cognitively too primitive for symbolic or lexicon-like communication. Boxgrove researchers are now explicitly testing that possibility.
My challenge is straightforward: apply the same seriousness to the visual organisation of stone tools. If repeated forms, motifs and selectable details occur within deliberately worked artefacts, document them, compare them and test whether they behave like a shared visual vocabulary.
The chronology cannot be used to rule the communication system impossible before the evidence is examined.
